Giffen Ott
Cofounder & Chief Executive Officer
Giffen brings to Synova more than 25 years of experience applying strategic and operational improvements to private equity investments, including seven years running operations of two successful management buyouts. Most recently, he served as an operating executive at US$9.6 billion PE fund Golden Gate Capital, where he focused on conventional and renewable energy. Before that he was a senior managing director at Evercore Partners, with a focus on energy. He also helped launch the electric utility practice at Bain & Company, where he was responsible for case teams performing due diligence and turnaround work for private equity clients. He holds a BBA summa cum laude from Southern Methodist University and a JD from Stanford Law School.
Christian Jacqui
President & Chief Operating Officer
Christian brings to Synova deep experience in engineering, procurement, and construction and non-recourse project finance generally and specifically as it applies to energy projects and projects in Synova’s initial geographical focus, which is Southeast Asia. Christian most recently served as Executive Vice President of Global Operations (€3 billion, 20,000 employees) at SNC Lavalin, one of the leading engineering and construction groups in the world and a major player in the ownership of infrastructure. Christian started his career with Spie Batignolles Group, where he rose from his first job as the site manager of a refinery in Bangkok to a project manager and later director of projects for the Hainan, China airport and transportation projects in Denmark and Hong Kong. He next spent six years based in Bangkok as the Country President for Alstom Holdings and the EVP of Asia-Pacific for Alstom Transport (projects under his watch at Alstom included power generation, transmission, and distribution projects as well as metro railway lines in Singapore, Bangkok, Taiwan, and Seoul). After Alstom, Christian moved to the Saur Group, where as a division CEO and later group COO he was part of a team that led a management buyout and rapid growth of this water and waste water infrastructure company. Prior to SNC Lavalin, he was the Deputy C.E.O. in charge of new project development and operations of Séchilienne-Sidec SA, a listed IPP focusing on biomass IPP development, ownership, and operations in France’s former colonies, a business analogous in many ways to Synova’s and where Giffen and Christian first got acquainted. Christian is an engineer and graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers in France. He has also completed the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD and the Finance for Executives program at Harvard Business School.
René brings to Synova over 18 years of experience in the fields of finance, control, M&A and business planning. Before joining the company, René worked for a number of renowned multinationals in different industries including agricultural commodities (Nidera), FMCG (Sara Lee), transportation (Maersk), pharmaceuticals (Eli Lilly) and engineering (York International). During these years he had the opportunity to work extensively with people from cultures around the world, including roles in finance and control and M&A in Asia. René leads the financial management of Synova’s global activities, which include accounting and control, project funding, risk management, compliance and tax. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics from Hogeschool‘s-Hertogenbosch and a Master’s degree in Business Economics from Rotterdam Erasmus University.
René Dekker
Chief Financial Officer
Bram develops gasification projects for Synova. He began his career researching combustion, then moved to studying gasification of waste, biomass, and coal. He served as the Dutch representative on the IEA task force on biomass gasification, and was involved in, and later responsible for, development of the MILENA and OLGA technologies at the energy research institute ECN. He holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Eindhoven Technical University.

Philippe brings to Synova 30 years’ of seasoned executive experience in engineering, procurement, and project delivery for the energy and oil & gas sectors and from a wide variety of geographies, including expertise in international restructuring, business development, market repositioning and merger and acquisition strategies. Philippe most recently served as EVP of ICARE Group, overseeing operations of one of the leading companies in comprehensive Project Development, Advisory, EPC, PMC and Procurement Services to the Power and Oil & Gas Sectors. Previously he worked at SNC-Lavalin as SVP Oil & Gas, where he worked with Christian and led its restructuring, regrowth, and ultimate sale to ICARE. Previously he worked for 22 years rising to various senior executive positions in Latin America, Middle East & India, and Western Europe within TECHNIP, a world leader in project management, engineering and construction for the energy industry. In this capacity he was responsible for the co-development of new technologies with oil & gas majors and fellow process companies, both offshore and onshore. Along the way, Philippe has also overseen the engineering of a waste to energy plant in South America and led a major cement company’s efforts to adopt alternative feedstocks of the types which are Synova’s focus. Philippe holds a Master’s Degree in Engineering from École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers, Paris.

In Asia since 2004, Jean Francois led Technip’s development in South East Asia and in particular Thailand and Myanmar, as Country Manager and Managing Director. Jean François started his career with Technip, a leading EPC contractor, where he spent more than 30 years, assuming various technical and managerial positions in different continents and countries but always focused on process technologies, licensing and projects delivery for heavy industries such as oil & gas refining, chemicals, mining and manufacturing.

Before joining Synova, Jean Francois worked as Executive Vice President Assets and Administrative for Mermaid Maritime Co. Ltd., a Bangkok SET public listed company providing specialized services for the offshore oil and gas industry. There, he spearheaded the restructuring of its affiliated companies and activities in South East Asia and Middle East.

Jean François earned his degree in chemical engineering from the Institut Superieur de Chimie Industrielle de Rouen.
Jean François Redon
Executive Vice President Projects
Michael specializes in contract, commercial and construction law and has spent his career managing the myriad contracts inherent in large public or private project development. He holds four engineering degrees, a LLB (honors) and an unfinished Doctorate in Constitutional Law (Final Year) from the University of Sydney and Queensland. Michael brings more than 35 years’ experience in drafting, negotiating and awarding performance contracts for inter alia, mining, oil and gas and new technology studies with BHP and a wide variety of major infrastructure projects for various Asian railway, port and airport authorities and concessionaires. Michael has played a key role in Thai infrastructure projects, including the creation of its major public transportation assets: the Bangkok Transit System (“BTS” project management and contracts for Italian-Thai and Siemens consortium for complete system); Metropolitan Railway Transit Authority (civil infrastructure consortium joint venture lead coordinator and contracts manager for Italian-Thai and Obyashi-Nisimatsu, and lead coordinator as Asia Pacific contracts manager for Alstom, where he worked with Christian Jacqui on the electrical and rail systems up-fit); and Suvarnabhumi Airport (contracts expert and internal counsel for Italian-Thai and Takanaka and Obyashi joint venture to construct the airport). Michael brings similar project experience from India, Vietnam, Korea, and Malaysia. He is an Australian citizen who has lived in SE Asia for more than twenty years.

Suwech brings a technical background to his role in outreach, planning, and marketing on behalf of Synova. He serves in a public relations and governmental affairs role, which draws on his experience as a leader in corporate planning or marketing, including both niche and mass marketing and communications, with companies as diverse as Michelin (tires), STEM Design (architecture and creative, where he previously worked for Nat), Waiwai (food products), Villa Medica (healthcare), and, most recently, Yamaha Music (education and trading). Suwech holds bachelor degrees in Chemical Engineering and Computer Science from Thammasat University, associate degree in Multimedia and Web Design from The Art Institute of Colorado, and a master degree in Real Estate Development from Thammasat University.

Silvia is a professional in management support and speaks various languages. She has 20+ years of experience in coordinating multinational offices, organizing conferences and travel for executive board members of large refiners and in various food and beverage and consumer product companies. She completed her study at Intercollege, in The Hague.
Silvia den Hoed
Executive Assistant
Supasthien focuses on building a secure supply of waste feedstock for Synova’s projects. Trained as a biotechnologist, he brings experience principally from the development of policy and programs to execute policy for plant propagation to supply feedstock to biomass energy projects and a source of protein. His forestry work includes securing a Cambodian forestry concession to supply woody biomass to a wood-pellet plant, which he set up and constructed in the Thai province just across the border, and working with a team to take over and successfully add to concessions in Myanmar, and to develop them for sustainable forestry. Other experience has been related to international regulatory procedures and standards in agricultural produce as well as experience in public sector relations and business development for a family business focused on engineering, procurement, and construction for the oil and gas sector. Well rounded in public sector relations in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia, his responsibilities include governmental affairs and relations related to the waste concessions for Synova’s projects. Supasthien is a native Thai schooled in the United Kingdom. He studied biotechnology at the University of Nottingham School of Biosciences and graduated with a MSc. in Crops Improvement.

Orarin has 15 years of experience in working for a variety of international organizations, including previous experience in the power business via management of the daily office operations of one of Thailand’s preeminent owners’ engineering firms.

Ivo has prior worked for the global accounting firm BDO for seven years as Senior Financial Analyst, in which he served a multinational client portfolio in complex tax, administration, financial reporting, corporate secretarial, accounting and control issues. Ivo received his post bachelor degree in Accounting at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht.

Before joining Synova, Richard was an economist at global economic consulting firm Compass Lexecon, where he provided data analytics for a variety of merger analysis, antitrust litigation, and financial valuation cases; deal values and sought damages often ranged from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. He also oversaw expert report generation, managing a team of analysts to ensure that work product met internal content and quality criteria as well as external deadlines. He holds a BA in Asian studies with an additional focus in economics from Amherst College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
Richard Mills
Director Project Management Office
Nat leads Synova’s Thai waste supply and public hearing initiatives. Nat is a native Thai citizen who, as an architect and real estate developer, has worked with Thai real estate entitlement and municipal development and code issues for 13+ years. In 2013, Nat combined his background in real estate, knowledge of local land use and building regulation, understanding of local culture, and drive to develop environmentally meaningful projects to co-found Blue Power Holding, a waste-to-energy consultancy service. In late 2014, he began working with Synova and has since become an integral part of Synova’s Thai project team. Born in New Orleans and raised in Thailand, Nat earned his Bachelors of Environmental Design in Architecture from the University of Colorado, at Boulder. He worked with Colorado-based design firm Communications Arts Inc. for four years before moving to Europe for Retail Design Consulting. Nat finally re-settled in Bangkok in 2003 and founded STEM, a real estate development and design consultancy firm.

Sandy spent the first ten years of her career in accounting as an accountant and later Senior Accountant in oil and gas and IT, for Seadrill Asia, Fujitsu, and True Corporation, and as an Export 3 rd Party Coordinator for Exxon. She earned her accounting degree from Srinakharinwirot University.
Saowanee (Sandy) Rangsrisak

Aidan has more than 20 years of experience in private equity and environmental management consulting in North America and Asia, and has overseen more than US$2 billion in venture capital, private equity, and M&A transactions. Since 2001, his principal geographic focus has been Asia, with a particular emphasis on China, India, and Southeast Asia. Before joining Synova, he founded a merchant bank with a geographic focus on Asia, where he oversaw several company startups and managed development of multiple renewable energy projects. Aidan holds a BA with honors and a master’s degree from the University of Liverpool, and has completed MBA studies in the Environmental Management Program at the University of Washington’s business school.

Before joining Synova, Peter spent more than 20 years at Shell, most recently in London as head of its Natural Gas Technology Group. At Shell, he oversaw development of the company’s Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology, from R&D through construction of the project’s first commercial plant, in Buggenum, the Netherlands. He also oversaw development of Shell’s Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS, a.k.a. Gas to Liquids or GTL) technology, from R&D through construction of a US$850 million SMDS plant in Bintulu, Malaysia. Peter holds a MS in chemical engineering from Delft Technical University and a BS in economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Bongkot brings to Synova 22 years of EPC experience in the offshore/onshore oil and gas and petrochemical industries, seven with CTCI followed by fifteen with Technip. She has a broad background based on rotating through roles in procurement and construction as well as engineering, but she specializes in project management and execution of engineering projects in their various phases, including Conceptual, Basic and Detail Engineering for both Lump sum and Reimbursable types of contracts.. Bongkot graduated in chemical engineering from Khon Kaen University.

A passion for and experience in cleantech investing.
Lynde has more than 30 years of experience in the waste-to-energy, project finance and related businesses. In 2015, together with Foresight Group and BioEnergy Infrastructure Group, he arranged more than GBP 350 million of project financing for three advanced technology waste to energy projects in the UK including the first project financing of a fluidised bed RDF gasification facility. Previously, Lynde was a member of the original senior management team that built Covanta Energy Corporation, a leading developer and operator of large-scale waste-to-energy facilities. As Senior Vice President and General Counsel and a member of the board of this NYSE company, he played a leadership role on a team that developed and financed 26 waste-to-energy projects, building the core of a company that today processes approximately 20 million tons a year of waste. Prior to Covanta, Lynde was a partner at the Nixon Peabody law firm with a particular emphasis on the development and financing of independent power projects using non fossil fuels. He is a graduate of Cornell University and holds a J.D. magna cum laude from Cornell Law School.

Ibrahim AlHusseini is a venture capitalist dedicated to financing companies that implement market ready solutions to the most pressing social and environmental challenges. He has spent much of his earlier career as a sustainability-focused entrepreneur and investor, with significant experience in operations, sales, and finance. Currently, he is dedicating himself to addressing our growing garbage problem. By launching FullCycle Energy L.P., Ibrahim and his partners aim to finance projects that revolutionize our relationship with waste, by converting a costly environmental problem into clean, valuable fuel to power communities around the world. Mr. Al Husseini concurrently manages his family office in Los Angeles, California. The Husseini Group LLC, has over a decade of experience funding ventures that embrace social enhancement and ecological sustainability. Holdings include, e.g., Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN), Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA), Bloom Energy, Ethical Electric, and Thrive Market. Ibrahim is a frequent speaker at family office and wealth conferences, colleges and universities nationally and internationally promoting the merits of impact investing and the solution economy. He is passionate about gender equality, arts and the environment, and he currently serves on the boards of several national and international non-profits working to address these issues.

Devin is a partner at the Ecosystem Integrity Fund, where he leads deal structuring and negotiations, assists with the fund strategy, and is also responsible for much of the firm’s financial and operations-focused due diligence. Devin’s background is as a sustainability-focused entrepreneur, with significant experience in operations, sales, and finance. He began his career in the film business, where he developed and honed his operations and cost-management skills as the producer of more than 50 large-budget commercials and music videos. After a brief stint at his family’s award-winning mutual fund where he worked with the investment team and institutional sales group, Devin became a partner at Aquillian Investments, a firm which advised family offices on renewable energy investments, and subsequently at the Ecosystem Integrity Fund. Devin is a CFA Charter holder, and has an MBA from Wharton. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA’s Honors Division where he was both an Alumni Scholar and Regents’ Scholar, earning a joint degree in Business and East Asian Studies.
